Wing is growing quickly in popularity and is an adrenalin-boosting experience as you glide on your magic carpet across the ocean.

Wing is a hybrid water sport that combines elements of windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing. It involves riding on a hydrofoil board, while holding a large inflatable wing that is similar to a kite but smaller and lighter. Wing foiling is possible in a wide range of conditions, from very light wind with flat water to strong wind with big swell. Whether you’re a seasoned water sports enthusiast, or a beginner looking for a new challenge, wing foiling is a great way to experience the thrill of flying on the water.

The Hydrofoil Board – Your Anti-Gravity Device

The hydrofoil board, or as we like to call it, the magic carpet of the sea, looks like a traditional surfboard, but with one major difference: a long, curved fin attached to the bottom of the board. This fin, called a hydrofoil, acts like an airplane wing and creates lift as the board moves through the water. This lift allows the board to rise up out of the water, making you float on the air, reducing drag and creating a smooth and fast ride. It takes a little practice to get the hang of it, but once you do, you’ll feel like you’re flying over the waves.

With its long, sleek design and mysterious hydrofoil attachment, whilst riding the foil you’ll feel like riding a unicorn sailing through the clouds!

Why Does The Hydrofoil Board Float? – Explaining The Magic Carpet

With its wing-like hydrofoil attached to the underside, this bad boy generates lift like nobody’s business. It’s like having a personal genie granting your wish to fly above the waves! So how exactly does it do it… the Riah Kite Academy people get a little geeky to explain…

This remarkable invention relies on the principle of lift to defy gravity and soar above the water. The hydrofoil itself is like a wing attached to the underside of the surfboard. When the board moves through the water, by manipulating the angle of attack, the hydrofoil creates a pressure differential with low pressure on the top of the wing, high pressure on the bottom. This difference in pressure creates lift that raises the board up, up, and away.

      Wing Size

When it comes to choosing the right size, we take a range of factors into account, including your weight, skill level, wind conditions, and the size of the board you are using.

Generally speaking, smaller wings (also called sails) are better suited for lighter riders or those just starting out, as they offer greater control and are easier to handle in lighter winds. Larger wings, on the other hand, are better for heavier riders or those with more experience, as they offer greater power and speed and are better suited for stronger winds.

      Wing Size Wind Range
      3m2 20-45 knots (23-50 mph)
      4m2 14-30 knots (16-34 mph)
      5m2 10-25 knots (11-28 mph)
      6m2 + 8-18 knots (9-20 mph)
      Hydrofoil Board Size

When deciding the optimal board to use (and to prevent you landing in our second lagoon) there are four main factors we should consider:

      • Weight is crucial for selecting a hydrofoil board. Heavier riders need larger boards with more lift, while lighter riders can use smaller ones.
      • Skill level matters too. Beginners need stability, so larger boards with a wider surface area are better. Experienced riders can choose smaller, more maneuverable boards.
      • Wind and water conditions are also important in board selection. Calmer waters and lighter winds require larger boards with more lift to get up and ride. Stronger winds and choppier waters are better suited for smaller boards with less lift and greater maneuverability.
      • Compatibility is key when it comes to selecting a hydrofoil board. It’s important to ensure that your board is compatible with your hydrofoil and wing/sail, as well as any other accessories you may be using.
      Rider Weight Foil Size (area)
      < 70 Kgs 1500 cm2
      70 Kg – 85 kg 2000 cm2

      Wonderful chilled ambiance

Spent the afternoon with the kids. Wonderful chilled ambiance, attentive staff and great food. My daughter loved her mocktail as well 🙂 definitely a great place to hang out even if you’re not a kiter. Already a big fan of their pizza and Riah will definitely become our favorite hang out place in El Gouna.
