El Gouna on Egypt’s Red Sea coast is rapidly becoming the top destination for wing foil lessons worldwide. The vast shallow lagoon provides flat, warm water ideal for learning — falls are soft, and students can stand up in waist-deep water at any time. Riah Kite Academy offers structured wing foil courses for all levels, from first-time flyers to experienced foilers, with all equipment provided.
Wing foiling requires flat water, consistent wind, and enough space to make mistakes safely. El Gouna’s lagoon delivers all three. The water depth of 0.6–1 metre means you can stand up after every fall, the flat surface eliminates chop that makes foiling difficult, and the 300+ windy days per year at 15–25 knots provide the perfect power range for wing foil learning. Water temperatures stay at 20–28°C year-round, so you can learn comfortably in a lycra or thin wetsuit.
Unlike kitesurfing, wing foiling doesn’t require extensive kite control training. The wing is held in your hands and depowers instantly when you let go — there’s no launch, no lines, and no safety system to learn. This makes it more intuitive for beginners. Most students at Riah Kite Academy are riding the foil within their second session.
Riah Kite Academy uses dedicated wing foil equipment — large stable boards for beginners, progressive foil sizes, and quality wings from leading brands. We don’t share equipment between kite and wing foil programmes, meaning the right gear is always available for your session.
Your first session begins on the beach learning to hold and control the wing. You’ll understand the wind window, how to generate power, and how to depower safely. Then you’ll enter the shallow lagoon on a large, stable board and practise standing, balancing, and steering while holding the wing — all without the foil attached.
Once you’re comfortable controlling the wing on the board, the foil is attached. You’ll learn to generate lift, manage your weight distribution, and experience your first foil flights. In El Gouna’s flat water, the foil lifts smoothly without the unpredictable bumps you’d experience in open-sea conditions. Most students achieve their first sustained foil ride during this session.
Advanced sessions focus on sustained foiling, turning, riding upwind, and transitioning. El Gouna’s spacious lagoon gives you plenty of room to practise long rides without obstacles or boat traffic. The consistent wind means you can plan your sessions confidently.
Dahab has deep water with swell — challenging for wing foil beginners. Hurghada has choppy conditions and no protected lagoon for safe learning. Soma Bay offers some flat water but at greater depths. El Gouna is the only Red Sea destination with a large, shallow, flat-water lagoon purpose-suited for wing foil learning. The combination of conditions, infrastructure, and qualified instruction makes it the clear choice.
Both sports are incredible, but they suit different preferences. Wing foiling is quicker to learn (most people foil within 2 sessions vs 3+ days for kitesurfing), requires less wind theory, and is more intuitive to pick up. Kitesurfing offers more variety (jumping, wave riding, freestyle) and works in a wider wind range. Many riders at Riah learn both — starting with wing foil for quick gratification, then adding kitesurfing for the full experience.
Riah Kite Academy offers wing foil courses at competitive rates with all equipment included. Private 1-on-1 instruction ensures fast progression, and group sessions are available for friends or couples learning together. Book your wing foil course online at riahkiteacademy.com or via WhatsApp. No prior water sports experience is required.
